Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo (popularly known as D’Banj) is a Nigerian singer/songwriter, Harmonica player and an entrepreneur. He was born June 9, 1980 in Zaria in the northern parts of Nigeria to a military father and a business/entrepreneurial mother. He attended Nigerian Military School and later, the Nigeria Navy School Ogun State where he was a member of the school band. In 1999, D’Banj went on to study Mechanical Engineering at the Lagos State University. His passion for music was fuelled after he lost his military pilot trainee brother to a plane crash and he inherited his Harmonica. Unlike his military dad, D’Banj relocated to the United Kingdom where his pursuit for his love of music began. Dapo adopted the stage name D’Banj, a combination of his first name “Dapo” and his last name “Oyebanjo”. The leader of Chibok Community in Abuja, Tsambido Abana, has expressed doubts about Federal Government’s commitment to rescue the over 200 school girls abducted by the Boko Haram terrorist group. Abana, stated that the lack of feedback from the government and the continuous attacks on communities around Chibok town, Borno State, indicated that the FG was not doing anything about the security situation in the area. The community leader said this in a telephone interview in Abuja on Sunday. He explained that attacks by Boko Haram, were still being carried out against communities around Chibok town. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Rahamon Bello, has explained why the ratings of Nigerian universities are low, especially in Africa. Bello spoke on Wednesday in Lagos while unveiling the UNILAG’s 2013 convocation programmes. He identified inadequate funding, security challenges, infrastructure deficiency and the poor patronage from foreign students as some of the reasons why Nigerian universities receive poor recognition among their peers on the continent. He noted, for instance, that UNILAG at present spends 95 per cent of its monthly allocation on the payment of staff salaries and emolument and about two per cent on overhead cost. According to him, the university spends about N40m monthly on such social facilities as payment of electricity bills and another N11m on overhead cost. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mbu, on Monday banned all protests over the 234 abducted Chibok school girls in the territory with immediate effect. Mbu, who announced the ban at a news conference in Abuja, said that the trend of the protest in the FCT was posing a serious security threat. “Accordingly, protests on the Chibok girls are hereby banned with immediate effect. As the FCT police boss, I cannot fold my hands and watch this lawlessness (protests). Information reaching us is that too soon, dangerous elements will join groups under the guise of protest and detonate explosives aimed at embarrassing the government,” he said. He said that after a group under the aegis of “#Bring Back Our Girls’’ protested on April 28, another group “Release Our Girls” emerged.
