FIFA fires ex-Blatter deputy Valcke, Hawit

FIFA on Wednesday said it had fired Sepp Blatter’s former right-hand man, Jerome Valcke, the latest casualty in a multi-layered scandal that has brought down the most powerful figures in world football.  Valcke was FIFA’s general secretary for nearly a decade, working alongside the body’s then-president Blatter, who has been banned for eight years over an ethics violation.Valcke, 55, was himself facing a possible nine-year ban sought by FIFA investigators over his alleged role in a scheme to sell 2014 World Cup tickets on the black market.  In a statement, FIFA said his employment contract had been “terminated”, even before a verdict in the ticket case was decided. “The FIFA emergency committee decided, on 9 January 2016, to dismiss Jerome Valcke from the position of FIFA secretary general with immediate effect,” the statement said.Valcke’s US-based lawyer Barry Berke said his client “remains confident that he will be fully vindicated and history will recognise all of his contribution

Five persons were killed and five others injured in a cult clash in Ikorodu, Lagos on Tuesday. The fight between the Aye and Eiyeconfraternities was said to have started around 1am during Itunmeko street carnival.Four of the injured have been transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), the other is still at Ikorodu General Hospital.According to sources, the trouble started after the Eiye cult group killed two Aye () members who were invited to the carnival.They two were said to have been killed on their way home. Boko Haram: Britain Deploys Extra Troops To Nigeria

The United Kingdom has deployed 35 military personnel in Nigeria as part of ongoing efforts to train Nigerian Armed Forces to fight Boko Haram. The personnel are also expected to provide assistance in countering improvised explosive devices, provide infantry training, as well as medical training and give advice. They were drawn from the Second Battalion and the Royal Anglian Regiment.A statement by Joe Abuku, the Press and Public Relations Affairs Officer, British High Commission, yesterday in Abuja, said the number of British personnel deployed on training tasks in Nigeria was expected to reach 300. Lassa Fever Spreads To Abuja, One Already Confirmed Dead

Jeez, the Federal Ministry of Health has confirmed the death of a Lassa fever victim at the National Hospital in Abuja. The death came a day after the Ministry confirmed that 41 persons had died so far, with 93 people in 10 states going through treatments, but said there were no reports of new cases.While announcing the death at the National Hospital on Wednesday, the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, called on Health workers at all levels to be more vigilant and look out for patients with symptoms of the virus.
