Florida girl, 13, to be tried as an adult for plot to kill her mother

The 13-year-old Florida girl who is accused of plotting with her boyfriend on Facebook to kill her mother will stand trial as an adult. Yaquelin Galvex Don has been charged with attempted murder after she lured her mother, Luz Galvez into their garage where her 15-year-old boyfriend, Pedro Solis was waiting to slit her throat. However, Galvez did not die after the March 9 attack and in an incredible twist Solis was convinced to rush her to the hospital where he dumped on the curb and then drove off. Galvez received emergency surgery that day on the wound to her neck and was able to communicate to police the same day that her daughter and her boyfriend were responsible. The teens had plotted through Facebook messages to kill the girl's parents for more than a week, investigators said because Don's parent's disapproved of their relationship. Deputies said that Don tricked her mother into coming to the garage with her where she was met by Solis. According to the arrest report,

Talented PhD student, 27, killed by hit-and- run driver while she was crossing the street

A talented PhD student and aspiring marine biologist has been killed by a suspected hit-and-run driver who was believed to be under the influence of alcohol. Rachel Anne Morrison, 27, was walking home with a friend at the intersection of Camino Del Mar and Coast Boulevard in Del Mar, San Diego, at around 10.15pm on Friday night when she was killed. The car ran a stop sign and collided with Miss Morrison. Instead of stopping, the driver fled the scene, San Diego County Sheriff's Department said. Miss Morrison was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla but was pronounced dead shortly after. The talented student studied at Scripps Insitution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. She became interested in fisheries management while studying for her undergraduate degree at Boston University. Police have since located a car suspected of being involved in the collision. Abuja varsity students protest lack of water, power

Students of the University of Abuja on Monday protested the lack power and water supply to the permanent campus site of the university. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that more than 1,000 students gathered on the campus about 8am on Monday and barricaded road leading to the Senate building and classes. Some of them told NAN that the protest became necessary because the school authorities had not provided power and water at the campus for three months running. Mr Mike Ajeoja, a Theatre student, said those of them living in hostel at the permanent site had no power and water for the past three months. Ajeoja said they had drawn the attention of the school management to their plight, but nothing had been done to address the situation. “We are left with no choice then to come out and tell the world our problems. “We will not stop the protest unless our problems are solved,” he said.
