81-year-old great-grandmother spends the night in jail for allegedly letting dogs run loose

An 81-year-old great-grandmother from Maryland has been placed behind bars for a minor pet violation committed almost a year ago. Last May, a neighbor snapped pictures of Mary Magdalene Root's small dogs running down the street and she was reported to Animal Control. It landed her with a $7,000 fine or up to a year in jail. The Harford County woman says she tried paying thousands of dollars in fines but couldn’t afford them. 'I’ve never had a crime. Never. Not even a traffic ticket,' Ms Root told CBS Baltimore. According to court records, the county issued a warrant for Root's arrest on February 12th after she failed to appear for a court hearing last November to address the civil citations. Upon finding out about that she was a wanted woman, she was admitted to Harford Memorial Hospital on Valentine's Day. It was then a judge had her arrested. She was booked, fingerprinted and made to wear a jumpsuit like any other prisoner. Despite her being an elderly woman wit

Female teacher, 31, faces up to seven years behind bars for 'performing a sex act on her 18-year-old student in her classroom and sending partially nude photos'

A high school teacher has been accused of performing a sex act on a student in her classroom. Emily Nesbit is also alleged to have sent photos of herself partially undressed to the 18 year old as well as exchanging text messages where she said she wanted sex. The 31-year-old is facing up to seven years in jail after being charged with institutional sexual assault. While the victim is at the age of consent officials in Pennsylvania said his age was irrelevant where teachers are accused of sexual misconduct with their students. Nesbit, an 11th grade English teacher, came under suspicion after another student noticed the text messages from her on the boy's cell phone. Court documents reveal that Nesbit and the teen were in regular contact for two months. Nesbit, who was the student's English teacher at Cumberland Valley High School in Cumberland County, sent him text messages that police said implied she had a desire to have sex with him. They also exchanged photographs of each

Comedian David Brenner dies at 78

(CNN)-- Comedian David Brenner, a regular on Johnny Carson's "The Tonight Show," has died after a battle with cancer, a family spokesman said Saturday. He was 78. Brenner was a staple on Carson's late-night show, appearing more times than any other guest -- 158, according to a bio on his official website. Before getting into comedy, Brenner helped write, produce and direct 115 TV documentaries, earning him nearly 30 awards. Brenner also was the author of five books -- his latest published in 2003, "I Think There's a Terrorist in My Soup." Even in death, he kept the jokes coming. Brenner's final request, according to family spokesman Jeff Abraham, was to have $100 in small bills tucked in his sock -- "just in case tipping is recommended where I'm going." His gravesite will read: "If this is supposed to be a joke -- then I don't get it!," according to Abraham. Comedian Joan Rivers, a longtime friend of Brenner's, tweeted

Gerrard, Suarez embarrass 10-man Man unite

Steven Gerrard scored twice from the spot as Liverpoolbeat Manchester United3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday. The Reds skipper converted his first penalty before the break after Rafael handled Luis Suarez's cross inside the box, before doubling his side's advantage after a Phil Jones foul minutes into the second half. But Gerrard missed the opportunity to become the first ever Premier League player to score a hat-trick of penalty-kicks after Nemanja Vidic was sent off for bringing Daniel Sturridge down in the area. The 33-year-old picked his spot for the third time of the afternoon but hit the post, although Suarez managed to add a third minutes later. The result moves Brendan Rodgers' side up to second in the Premier League table, four points off league-leaders Chelsea. United, by contrast, remain seventh - 14 points off Liverpool.

Family of '12 Years A Slave' Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o suffered real torture and brutality in Kenya, father reveals

The father of Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o has revealed how the 12 Years A Slave actress's family suffered real brutality and torture in Kenya. Miss Nyong'o won both awards and critical praise for her performance as Patsey in director Steve McQueen's harrowing film in which her character appeared in some of the most shocking scenes, but her own family were also the victims of harassment, violence and even murder. As an opponent of former Kenyan PresidentDaniel arap Moi, the actress's father Peter Anyang Nyong'o was tortured repeatedly, while her uncle Charles Nyong'o's body was never found after he was attacked on board a ferry and hurled off the ship. Peter Nyong'o, now a leading Kenyan politician who serves on the country's Senate, has now revealed the true extent of family's brutal treatment, which led to them having to flee to Mexico where Lupita was born in March 1983. Mr Nyong'o said he had struggled to watch his daughter's actin

Earthquake Storms Coastal Peru

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck about four miles from the coastal city of Sechura in northern Peru on Saturday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. No damage or injuries were reported in the quake, which happened at a depth of six miles. The quake happened in a region that marks the boundary between two tectonic plates, where the oceanic crust of the Nazca Plate moves under the South American Plate. These subduction zones are often the sites of volcanic activity and earthquakes

Angry Mouriho Slams Referee

Jose Mourinho gave a scathing verdict on referee Chris Foy after the Chelsea boss and two of his players were sent off in a 1-0 loss at Aston Villa. Mourinho was sent to the stands in stoppage-time following the dismissals of midfielders Willian and Ramires. “We must be very, very unlucky to have another refereeing performance like this one,” said Mourinho. “This is not about one mistake from a referee. This is about a performance from minute one to minute 94.” The game’s biggest flash-point occurred in the closing stages as Ramires was shown a straight red card for a two-footed tackle on Villa’s Karim El Ahmadi. Mourinho, who was dismissed in the fracas that followed the incident, claimed he was trying to alert Foy to a push by Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor on Ramires. Agbonlahor had already been substituted but rose from the bench to confront Ramires following his challenge. “I don’t know why I was sent off,” Mourinho told BBC Radio 5 live. “I asked, but the referee refused to spe

Popular NBC host Ahmad Rashad said to be 'dating senior adviser to Barack Obama Valerie Jarrett'

Former NFL star and ‘Inside the NFL’ host Ahmad Rashad is reportedly dating President Barack Obama’s senior adviser. Rumors have been flying all over the capital that Rashad and Valerie Jarrett are an item, but no one appears willing to confirm or deny the supposed romance. Rashad himself told the New York Timesto 'get a hobby while I get my phone number taken off the listing’ when asked about he and Jarrett. The former Minnesota Viking’s appearances at Michelle Obama’s 50th birthday party earlier this year and at the president’s unveiling of his ‘Mr Bother’s Keeper’ initiative aimed at helping young black man find career paths only further stoked the rumor mill flames. Whispers grew into chatter though when Rashad was seen playing golf with President Obama on a recent family vacation – Jarrett did not join them on the links but was on the trip, the Times noted. ‘They haven’t gone out in public,’ an unnamed source told New York Postcolumnist Richard Johnson last November. ‘They

Man, 21, handcuffs himself to highway rest stop 'where he was conceived' to protest its closure

To some, the Des Plaines Oasis is just a glorified food court with hungry truckers and greasy snacks. But for 21-year-old Kevin Walters, the glass pavilion straddling the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway in Illinois means so much more - he claims it's the site of his conception. So when news broke that the highway rest stop would close on Sunday after more than 50 years to make way for new roads, the Crystal Lakes resident handcuffed himself to a door in protest. 'It is a weird story, I must admit,' Walters said, according to CBS Chicago.'About 21 years ago, my parents were at a Phil Collins concert here in Chicago, and one thing led to another. They ended up at the oasis…and I was conceived there.' When he was asked how he found out about his origins, he said it 'just sort of came out' during a conversation with his parents. 'They were like, ’Oh yeah, hey, we never really told you how you were born, or your conception,’ and my parents are weird people, so i
