The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Rahamon Bello, has explained why the ratings of Nigerian universities are low, especially in Africa. Bello spoke on Wednesday in Lagos while unveiling the UNILAG’s 2013 convocation programmes. He identified inadequate funding, security challenges, infrastructure deficiency and the poor patronage from foreign students as some of the reasons why Nigerian universities receive poor recognition among their peers on the continent. He noted, for instance, that UNILAG at present spends 95 per cent of its monthly allocation on the payment of staff salaries and emolument and about two per cent on overhead cost. According to him, the university spends about N40m monthly on such social facilities as payment of electricity bills and another N11m on overhead cost. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mbu, on Monday banned all protests over the 234 abducted Chibok school girls in the territory with immediate effect. Mbu, who announced the ban at a news conference in Abuja, said that the trend of the protest in the FCT was posing a serious security threat. “Accordingly, protests on the Chibok girls are hereby banned with immediate effect. As the FCT police boss, I cannot fold my hands and watch this lawlessness (protests). Information reaching us is that too soon, dangerous elements will join groups under the guise of protest and detonate explosives aimed at embarrassing the government,” he said. The All Progressives Congress has condemned the killing of the Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Idrissa Timta, by suspected Boko Haram gunmen, saying it confirms the terror group as the enemy of the whole of Nigeria, rather than a group set up by some imaginary opposition political party or elites to bring down the Jonathan Administration. He admitted to being a drug addict but protested saying he was innocent of other charges. A 40-year old housewife, Shola Afolayan, has been sent to Kirikiri Prisons in Lagos State after her husband absconded with a loan of N1.5million. PMNews reports that the mother of five kids stood as guarantor for her husband who borrowed N1.5 million from Mrs Chioma Ohaegbu to set up a business and promised to pay at a fixed date. But according to Shola, immediately her husband collected the loan, he abandoned her and their children and fled with the money. Narrating what happened, Chioma said Mr. Afolayan came to her house at 12, Oludegun Street, Ire Akari Estate, Isolo in Lagos and solicited for financial assistance. Ohaegbu said before she gave him the money, Afolayan took her to his house at Isheri-Oshun in Lagos and introduced her to his wife and children, assuring her that he would not disappoint her if given the loan. Oritsefemi whom a lot of people are now forced to reckon with after dishing out hits upon hits has said his story has changed and things are now better for him. Speaking with a Punch reporter, Oritsefemi said he charges N3m per show and he could do 20 states in a row, making him earn about N60m per brand-concert. Here is how he explained it in his own words; “Things have definitely changed. Nowadays, I don’t charge less than N3m to perform at a concert. Sometimes the concerts are funded by multinational companies and we have to tour 20 states. Multiply N3m by 20 states and you will understand what I am saying. The situation has indeed improved”.

The mother-in-law of Bayelsa State speaker, Madam Ogboro Dark was yesterday kidnapped by unknown gunmen who stormed her community in the state around 2.00am.The gunmen shot sporadically as they made their way into her home and abducted her. According to few villagers who witnessed the scene, the armed men entered the community through the waterside in three boats and were fast to leave as soon as they bundled the woman. The State commissioner has confirmed the incident and says police will do everything to bring back the aged woman.
