Six weeks to this year’s general elections, the Federal Government has yet to appropriate the remaining N75bn out of the N120bn budgeted for the conduct of the poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission. This, according to social commentators, lawyers, and other concerned stakeholders is already hampering the INEC’s preparations for the much awaited elections. Saturday PUNCH learnt that INEC had estimated that it would need N120bn to prepare for the elections, but only N45bn was appropriated by the Budget Office of the Federation in 2014 budget, leaving a shortfall of N75bn. The House of Representatives had recently raised concerns over the general elections, saying that adequate funding and security would determine the credibility of the polls. He said, as the President, he hears the cries and share the sorrow and pain of victims of insurgency that have been turned to widows and orphans by the terrorists and he would not abandon them. Jonathan made the commitment in his New Year message broadcast on radio and television networks. The President said, “We are re-equipping and re-positioning our armed forces to enhance their capacity to win the ongoing war against terror and insurgency. “Regrettably, terrorists have unleashed much pain and agony on our land. They have made widows of our mothers and sisters and orphans of our children. “They have shut down businesses, desecrated places of worship and brought untold hardship to both men and women. They have violated the culture and peaceful way of life in our country, which took generations to build.

Vice Presidential Candidate of the APC, Prof Yemi Osibajo says it is only Nigerians who love hunger that will return the present administration into office in 2015. He said this at a town hall meeting for artisans, tradesmen and farmers organised by the Lagos state government at the state secretariat yesterday December 30th 2015. “No one is ignorant of all that is happening to us in this country. No one likes hunger and poverty; but people are hungry. In 2015, only those who love to continue to be hungry would prefer that the government in power at the centre remains there. By God’s grace, we would remove them from the seat of power. The people there presently cannot do anything, because they don’t know how to. They lack the capacity and capability to govern the country. I pray for the farmers and artisans that the Lord will bless us in the incoming year.” he said.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said he did not expect Nigerians to shower praises on him while he is still in office. He said it was normal that public office holders would only be commended after leaving office by the time his achievements were being compared with others. The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has enlisted the support of voters in Abia State and the South-East in general for the re-election bid of her husband, President Goodluck Jonathan. Buhari, who spoke in Abuja on Tuesday, said he borrowed the idea from how President Barrack Obama funded his presidential campaign in the US. Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun, on Tuesday presented the 2015 state budget of N197.08 billion to the House of Assembly for confirmation. The budget was tagged: “Budget of renewed hope’’. Mr Segun Olorunsogo, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Budget and Economic Planning, presented the budget on behalf of the governor. Aregbesola said that the budget would ensure the completion of ongoing projects, and commencement of new ones that would bring about positive impact on socio- economic life of the citizens in Osun. The governor said that the sum of N131. 8 billion was estimated for revenue component, while the capital expenditure was N65. 3 billion amounted to N197. 080 billion. “The recurrent revenue is N131. 8 billion and the Capital receipt was N65, 340 billion, which brought about the total sum as indicated,’’ he said.
