Why I should be re-elected — Jonathan

Image
Lagos Island stood still as President Goodluck Jonathan flagged off his re-election campaign in the nation’s former federal capital. Supporters of the party's governorship candidates in the South-West, who were bussed in for the function, also seized the opportunity to show off their principals on poster boards. The only exception was Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Ms Jumoke Akinjide, whose posters, with the inscription, “Jumoke for Jonathan”, were conspicuously carried by many women in the arena. On ground to add colour to the flag-off were Nollywood actors and actresses led by the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Ibinabo Fibersima. Other celebrities, who made brief solidarity speeches, include Mr Segun Arinze, Joseph Benjamin, Kate Henshaw, Monalisa Chinda and Onyeka Onwenu. Gospel artiste Sammy Okposo, Double Wahala crooner Oritsefemi and popular Fuji musician, Obesere, thrilled the crowd at the flag-off ground. Super Eagles ski

Image

He also mentioned that the Federal Government was working hard to improve the working conditions of the armed forces, including the provision of hardware and other equipment. According to the president, Enugu State had also benefitted from the transformation plan of his administration. “We have built and rehabilitated more than 200 kilometers of roads in Enugu State. The state has als

If You Cannot Lie , Get Out Of Politics – Niger State Governor

Image
Governor of Niger state, Aliyu Babangida says that one has to tell lies to survive in the political scene of today, adding that there is no morality in politics. He says if anyone wants to pursue morality, they should go and become Imams or Pastors. The Governor stated this while inaugurating the PDP guber campaign committee in Minna the state capital January 5th. “If you cannot lie, get out of politics. Anything you are involved in has its own rule. You are in politics to win, win first and let other things follow. Don’t be the one crying louder; lest you will be the one they will take to court. If you are talking of honesty or morals, go and become an Imam or pastor. Politics cannot be the way it used to be. “The challenges are more now, the variables have changed, the issues that we are going to face in 2015 are different from the ones we faced in 1999 and we must bear this in mind. Our society is not as grateful as it used to be, the values and morals have gone

Buhari vows to jail corrupt politicians

Image
The All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Major-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has assured Nigerians that all corrupt politicians will end up in jail once he is elected into power. Buhari, who gave the assurance on Tuesday during the APC rally and the presentation of the party’s flag to Umana Umana as its governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State in Uyo, said he would block all loopholes through which money was being siphoned out of the country. “When we come into power, anyone who steals Nigeria’s money will end up in Kirikiri Maximum Prisons. We are going to make sure that Nigeria’s wealth belongs only to Nigerians,” he said. He decried the nation’s over-dependence on oil, saying the country would not have faced the current economic downturn if the country had invested in agriculture. According to Buhari, Nigeria used to export tin and columbite, but all of a sudden stopped producing and exporting these minerals with the hope that the country has oil. On the po

Six Weeks To Election: FG Yet To Approve N75bn INEC Budget

Image
This story actually made the leading story of today's Saturday Punch copy. See story below. Six weeks to this year’s general elections, the Federal Government has yet to appropriate the remaining N75bn out of the N120bn budgeted for the conduct of the poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission. This, according to social commentators, lawyers, and other concerned stakeholders is already hampering the INEC’s preparations for the much awaited elections. Saturday PUNCH learnt that INEC had estimated that it would need N120bn to prepare for the elections, but only N45bn was appropriated by the Budget Office of the Federation in 2014 budget, leaving a shortfall of N75bn. The House of Representatives had recently raised concerns over the general elections, saying that adequate funding and security would determine the credibility of the polls. The House Committee on Electoral Matters said it had resolved to summon the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru

GEJ vows to defeat terrorists

Image
BY OLALEKAN ADETAYO PUNCH President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday vowed that as the Commander-in-Chief of the nation’s Armed Forces, he would defeat Boko Haram in Nigeria. He said, as the President, he hears the cries and share the sorrow and pain of victims of insurgency that have been turned to widows and orphans by the terrorists and he would not abandon them. Jonathan made the commitment in his New Year message broadcast on radio and television networks. The President said, “We are re-equipping and re-positioning our armed forces to enhance their capacity to win the ongoing war against terror and insurgency. “Regrettably, terrorists have unleashed much pain and agony on our land. They have made widows of our mothers and sisters and orphans of our children. “They have shut down businesses, desecrated places of worship and brought untold hardship to both men and women. They have violated the culture and peaceful way of life in our country, which took generations to build.

Only Those Who Love Hunger Will Vote Jonathan – APC VP Candidate Osinbajo

Image
Vice Presidential Candidate of the APC, Prof Yemi Osibajo says it is only Nigerians who love hunger that will return the present administration into office in 2015. He said this at a town hall meeting for artisans, tradesmen and farmers organised by the Lagos state government at the state secretariat yesterday December 30th 2015. “No one is ignorant of all that is happening to us in this country. No one likes hunger and poverty; but people are hungry. In 2015, only those who love to continue to be hungry would prefer that the government in power at the centre remains there. By God’s grace, we would remove them from the seat of power. The people there presently cannot do anything, because they don’t know how to. They lack the capacity and capability to govern the country. I pray for the farmers and artisans that the Lord will bless us in the incoming year.” he said.

Must Read: New year text by Bola Tinubu

Image
As we enter a New Year today, it is all too easy to give in to despair and despondency at the current state of Nigeria. The gap between our tremendous potentials as a country and our actual attainments is depressing and disheartening. For a country as endowed with human, material and natural resources as Nigeria, the level of poverty in which the vast majority of our people live is appalling and unacceptable.  The voodoo statistics of illusory growth and progress peddled by those currently in charge of Nigeria’s affairs do not reflect the dire material circumstances of millions of Nigerians. The ever widening inequality between the wealthy minority and the impoverished majority is fueled largely by a scale of corruption and outright theft of public funds that have reached unprecedented heights in today’s Nigeria. All of these are responsible for the large scale manifestation of sundry forms of violence and insecurity across the country that undermines the very foundations of the Nig

A New Year message to Nigeria’s youth from Muhammadu Buhari

Image
As we welcome the year 2015, I have shared a message to Nigerians in general, but I find it crucial to send another message directly to Nigeria’s youth, who are the major stakeholders of this enterprise. The year 2014 was a challenging one for most citizens of our dear country. We remember our compatriots who were brutishly killed or maimed by evil terrorists in 2014. I remember with a still broken heart that 219 of our children from Chibok are yet missing, let down by a country that should protect them. I remember that, even as I speak, some of our towns and villages are yet under the occupation of Boko Haram. Yes, it is enough for you to despair. It is enough for you to wonder if your country cares about you and can protect you. But do not despair.2015 has arrived at a time of great discomfort; but the beauty of the New Year is that we can look forward with renewed hope and the knowledge that things can and will change. In Nigeria’s case, we can truly look forward to the change

Nigerians Will Praise Me After Leaving Office – Jonathan

Image
President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said he did not expect Nigerians to shower praises on him while he is still in office. He said it was normal that public office holders would only be commended after leaving office by the time his achievements were being compared with others. Jonathan spoke while granting audience to a delegation from his home state, Bayelsa. Members of the delegation led by Governor Seriake Dickson were in the Presidential Villa, Abuja to felicitate with him on Christmas and New Year festivities. The President said notwithstanding the various challenges facing the country, he would do his best to make his people proud. He said, “I always say that I will not even expect praises now because hardly do people praise serving leaders. It is when you leave, people will begin to know. “When you leave, people will begin to compare what you have done over the period vis-a-vis what others have done, then they will compare you with whoever takes

APC’s presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, says he has received over N54m in donations from Nigerians to support his campaign in the 2015 elections. Image
Femi Fani Kayode has written an open letter to Yemi Osinbajo who has been picked as Buhari’s running mate in 2015. According to Mr Fani, Yemi Osinbajo is a well-educated man who shouldn’t be in the same party with the likes of Buhari, talk less of being his running mate in the presidential race. What has light got to do with darkness? These and many more where the questions Fani asked Osinbajo in this open letter. Please read below; “I am glad that the APC eventually took my advice and saw the wisdom in not fielding a muslim/muslim ticket for the 2015 Presidential election even though I hear that, right up till the last minute, they almost did.
