Ìbọrí (Propitiation): Things to put in cognizance
Sometimes it is necessary to feed one's ori with some foods such as a life catfish, white cock, oromodiye (baby chick), epo pupa (red palm oil), obi àbàtà (Yorùbá native kolanut), orógbó (bitter kola), or any other ritual elements that Ifa or any of the other Orisà may advise.
To start the propitiation (ibori), the person propitiating ori should take the following steps:
1. The person should take his/her bath and deal with his/her toilet needs.
2. The person should put on his/her finest clothes.
3. The person should place all the ritual elements where the ibori is to be
performed.
4. With total submission to the Òrisà and Olódùmarè, the person should chant
ìbà (pay homage to whom due to).
5. The person should call on his/her ancestors while chanting the ìbà.
6. The person should mention his/her parents' names in the iba for support.
7. The person should also call his/her ori (personal god/destiny).
8. Above all, the person should call on all the Orişà and Olódùmarè (God) for manifestation of the prayers to be said.
9. After the ibà, the person should explain to his/her ori (personal god) what he/she is about to do and why.
10. Thereafter, the person should mention all the things that he/she is giving his/her ori (personal god), pray over the things, then offer them to his/her ori by touching each item on the forehead.
If a rooster (cock) is offered to ori, the right middle finger should be used to touch the blood, then rubbed on the head from the front - forehead to the back of the head three time with the middle finger collecting the blood each time.
Whenever ori is appeased, ori-imú (inner self) must also be propitiated.
To propitiate ori-inú, one must put whatever is given to one's ori on the tip of the index finger and touch the navel (which is the medium to ori-inú) with it saying the following prayer, "may my ori-inú (inner self) work positively in conjunction with my ori (destiny)."
The same index finger with the offerings still on it, should be used to touch the right big toe and a prayer that says, must be said. "may my feet not lead me astray"
Relevant Ifá chants for ori and any or all the other chants for ori can be included in the prayer.
After the ìbori (ori propitiation), the person that propitiates his/her ori should stay indoors that day and be calm.
It is important for the person to stay away from anything that can excite him/her that day. Because of this necessity to remain indoors after the ìborí, it is advisable for the extremely busy person to do the ìbori in the evening after retiring from all daily activities.
It is equally important for whoever propitiates his/her orí to abstain from sex on the day/night of the labour.
