Ogun State Teachers begin Indefinite Strike

Activities in public primary and secondary schools in Ogun State were paralysed on Friday as teachers began an indefinite strike as directed by the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers.

Pupils who went to school were sent back home by the head teachers and principals.

The situation was the same in Abeokuta, Ijebu Igbo, Remo, and Ijebu Ode and other areas, as teachers stayed away from classrooms.

A press statement issued by the state Chairman of the NUT, Mr. Dare Ilekoya, and Coordinating Secretary, Ade Buraimo, which was made available to our correspondent, stated that the teachers had intimated the state government of
their grievances and impending strike through a letter dated February 9, 2014.

In the statement, their grievances include the case of 34 teachers who were retired compulsorily in 2014; non- remittance of deductions to appropriate organisations; non-
recognition of university degrees in primary schools, among others.

In a swift reaction, Governor Ibikunle Amosun said he was not aware of
the development.

He said this while answering questions from journalists in Ijebu Igbo on the development during his campaign tour of Ijebu-North Local
Government Area.

“I am on campaign and I cannot talk about what I don’t know. When I get back to Abeokuta, I will find out, but I know no responsible teacher will
be out of schools.”
