The Economistis an English-language weekly newspaper owned by The Economist Newspaper Ltd and edited in offices inLondon.

[2][3][4]Continuous publication began under founderJames Wilsonin September 1843.

For historical reasons The Economist refers to itself as a newspaper, but each print edition appears on small glossy paper like anews magazine, and itsYouTube channel is called Economist Magazine.

[5]In 2006, itsaverage weekly circulation was reported to be 1.5 million, about half of which were sold in the United States.

[6]The publication belongs toThe Economist Group, half of which is owned byPearson PLCvia the Financial Times.

A group of independent shareholders, including manymembers of the staff and theRothschild banking family of England, [7]owns the rest. Aboard of trustees formally appoints the editor, who cannot be removed withoutits permission.

AlthoughThe Economisthas a global emphasis and scope, about two-thirds of the 75 staff journalists are based in London.

[8]As of March 2013, the Economist Group declared operating profit of £68m.

[9]The Economistclaims that it "is not a chronicle of economics".

[10]Rather, it aims "to take part in a severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress".

[11]It takes an editorial stance of classical liberalism and economic liberalism which is supportive offree trade, globalisation, free immigrationandcultural liberalism(such as supportinglegal recognition forsame-sex marriage). The publication has described itself as "a product of the Caledonian liberalism of Adam Smith and David Hume".

[12]It targets highly educated readers and claims an audience containing many influential executives and policy-makers.

[13]Some of The Economist readers consume both elite and mass media. The newspaper's CEO described this recent global change, which was first noticed in the 1990s and accelerated in the beginning of the 21st century, as a "new age of Mass Intelligence".

[14][15]Mission statementOn the contents page of each newsmagazine,The Economist's mission statement is written in italics.

It states thatThe Economist was "First published in September 1843 to take part in 'a severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress'."
