Gang rape: Four men bag life imprisonment in India

Four men were on Friday sentenced to life imprisonment for gang-raping an 18-year old telephone operator in Mumbai, news reports said. Three of the men were found guilty for the gang rape of a 22-year old woman photojournalist in the same deserted mill complex in August, 2012. After the photojournalist complained to the police about the rape and the case made headlines across the country, the telephone operator came forward saying she had been raped at the same location a month earlier. The telephone operator identified three of the men accused in the photojournalist’s case as among the four who raped her. A fifth accused in the photojournalist’s gang rape, a minor, is being tried in a juvenile court. The attacks in Mumbai, known as one of India’s safest cities for women, sparked renewed anger over rape in India after a fatal gang rape of a student in a bus in New Delhi in December, 2012 led to weeks of protests. The government had promised swifter prosecutions after the Delhi gang rape and laws against sexual violence were made stricter.
