Two New York police officers have been shot dead by a gunman who then killed himself, officials said. The officers were killed without warning on Saturday as they sat in their patrol car in Brooklyn, Police Commissioner William Bratton told a news conference, flanked by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. “Although we’re still learning the details, it’s clear that this was an assassination, that these officers were shot execution style,” said de Blasio. Bratton named the gunman as Ismaaiyl Brinsley, 28, and said he fled into a nearby metro station after the shooting and died there from a self- inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Police said Brinsley had shot and wounded his girlfriend in Baltimore before driving to Brooklyn. Bratton added that the gunman had made online posts that were “very anti-police”. The Central Bank of Nigeria said that the commemorative N100 banknote unveiled recently by the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan , is going into circulation from Friday. This is contained in a statement signed by Ibrahim Mu’azu , Head, Corporate Communications, on Friday in Abuja. It directed all branches of the bank to commence issuance of the currency in their respective locations. “The commemorative note will circulate alongside the existing N100 note. The note, which is embedded with features to assist the visually impaired recognise genuine notes, also has other security features easily identifiable through look, feel and tilt of the currency note,,” it said. It recalled that the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele , at the unveiling of the new banknote, explained that it was designed with enhanced security to offer robust resistance against counterfeiting.
