The Yoruba Tradition Elders Committee has sent warning to those Ifa/Orisa pratitioners who award "fake" titles to the Diaspora practitioners. The statement was made on the 22/07/2017 after their meeting in Osogbo at the Araba Elebuibon's Palace. The full report of the meeting was posted online by the spoke-person of the committee, Baba Adigun Olosun. Check out the report here-under:

Yoruba Tradition Elders Committee 22.7.17 Osogbo
These are the resolutions of Yoruba Tradition Elders Committee with the aim of sanitising Yoruba tradition at their meeting in Osogbo at the Araba Elebuibon’s Palace Osogbo, Nigeria on 22.7.17.
- Any title that cannot be supported by the Yoruba tradition are fakes especially all the Agbaye titles, titles with continental attachments and titles with country attachments. Those who are parading themselves with these titles are advised to return to their titles as community, Iles and group titles.

Initiation is best done in Nigeria but in exceptional cases it can be done outside Nigeria with at least three competent babalawos/babalorisas and at least two assistants.
-On Oyo saga, the statements from the elders on the issue is not endorsement of frauds in Yoruba tradition, their effort is just to make peace to reign in Oyo community. They are not in confrontation with Alaafin of Oyo and also they are not against the efforts of Alaafin to sanitize Yoruba tradition in Oyo.
- On Aikulola Nathan Lugo, he is not qualified to initiate people into any aspect of Yoruba tradition eg. Egungun, Ifa, Egbe, Ogboni, Osun, Obatala, etc. We heard from reliable sources that he is ready to apologize to the elders for being rude to them. All initiations he has already done are declared null and void because of his incompetence. His prosecution by the Nigerian government stays.
- Obafemi Origunwa has sent accepted apology to us and we are working on his rehabilitation and after everything is settled, he would be accorded his due and we are now saying that, domestic abuse, frauds, questionable characters are not acceptable in Yoruba tradition. They are taboo breakers.
- On gay issue, Yoruba tradition and Nigerian law are against homosexuality. Initiation of gay into Ifa is a choice by a babalawo, either to do it or not. But any gay who will come to Nigeria is advised to be aware that practicing as gay is a crime and it attracts 21 years imprisonment without the option of fine. No way for gay practice in Nigerian society.
- Elders of Yoruba tradition all over the world are advised to be settling their differences or sanctioning the erring priests in their community first, if there is no headway, Yoruba Tradition Elders Committee can be contacted for necessary action with hard evidence.
- Gay, bestiality, pedophile, stealing, frauds, backbiting, drug dealing, drug sales and trafficking are against Yoruba tradition.
- Ifa/Orisa titles can be awarded by the leaders of temples and the jurisdiction of the titles are within the temples or community who gave out the titles.

  1. After contacting several men who call themselves Babalawo and being solicited for money I determined that these actions would be a profanation of any true religion. Of course, I have refused. I have bartered with a couple of them bringing thexquoted price as low as possible. African Americans are especially hungry for cultural identity. Please tell me if it is traditional to request an "offering" for a reading, consultation or an ebo? There are many such scams in thr USA.How can I learn to practice IFA other than teading reliable materials?

    1. Scammers are part of those who hinder the integrity of this precious religion and our elders are striving hard to fight this filthy act.
However, there are much of true babalawos/babaolorisas here at home and there in the diaspora.
For you to trust or confirm if a person is truly a babalawo/babaolorisa, you must make sure you find out about such person before trusting him or her.
On how to practice Ifa or to know more about Ifa, you must find a reliable practitioner or babalawo/iyanifa to put you through. Also visit nearby Ifa temples around you to worship and via that place you would probably find a true person to guide. Pending the time you do that stick to the reliable reading materials you have been reading. Thank you..

This is a Notice to the Community at Large that Baba Adigun Olosun will no longer be spearheading Yoruba Tradiition Elders Community as a Spokesperson or in any shape and form representing the Group of Yoruba Elders Committee due to his Constant Public outburst and erratic behavior on cyberspace that does not align with the Policies and Procedures of what this platform stands for. Deal with him at your own risk.

  4. Fake initiation in Mexico
This initiation is considered fake and fraudulent on the following grounds:
    1. That the initiation was conducted by unqualified and incompetent babalawos.
    2. That the initiation was conducted by only two so-called babalawos without the presence of any competent Babalawo and other officiating priests in attendance.
    3. Judging from the photos posted, the dressing of the initiate leaves more questions than answers.
    4. That some necessary and important materials needed for a typical Ifa initiation were absent during the fraudulent initiation.
    5. That the said initiation did not meet the minimum required standards for a typical Ifa initiation.
The above grounds bothers on competence, validity, and extortion. Going by the guidelines of ethics of practice as released by the International Council for Ifa religion (ICIR) for a typical Ifa initiation which reads in part as follows:
    Boundaries of Competence
“…Practitioners must provide religious/spiritual services, in areas only within the boundaries of their competence, based on their education, training, supervised experience, consultation, or professional experience. There must be proper training under a competent Babalawo or accredited Ifa colleges/institutions and graduated before practicing Ifa. A practitioner must maintain and improve own competence and expertise through lifelong education and training. Going through Ifa initiation does not automatically confer on an initiate the title of Babalawo and does not permit him/her to practice as a Babalawo without first going through the training. No Oluwo must give a consecrated opele to a new initiate who is not a qualified Babalawo. What is accepted for an omo awo is a practicing opele called ‘opele karagba’. A babalawo must always strive to reach out to other competent Orisa Priests or Priestesses for a more detailed and deeply rooted Orisa rites and rituals in order to ensure correctness and competence in the performance of the rituals for a client.
A practitioner must not single handedly initiate people into Ifa as the process of Ifa initiation is a life changing one for the person to be initiated. Such initiations will be considered fake and null. Proper procedures must be strictly adhered to while assistance of other competent Babalawo must be sought in that regard.
A practitioner must not collect or extort money from the client or any member of the public under false pretense…”
It is obvious that the said initiation is considered fake and invalid unless the so called presiding Babalawo gives the reason why it should not be considered so. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2531974880253056&type=3

  5. Nathan Lugo is Gay but pretends to be Hetero. He mades loads of money in Brazil "initiating" people. He sacrificed the animals and threw them away because he "didn't have enough people or time to clean/cook them". Sure, he speaks Yoruba well and knows Isese Lagba (he doesn't work, so he had plenty of time to study), but he is a fraud and has zero dpirituality. Ogun does not like liars, but Baba Boricua lies all the tine.

  6. lol this guy has no Aşe for two reasons: he is gay and he lies about his homosexuality. Ifa and Ogun do not like liars. lugo's 'godsons' made homophobic remarks and this babaclown pretended everything was OK (a decent Bavalawo would correct them). little did they know that he is a liar and a homo.
