Five Factors that hinder the intergrity of Yoruba Tradition
The integrity of our dearest Yoruba religion is washing away in the diaspora which is caused by some babalawos/ Orisa practitioners here at home. The current trend on Facebook about an illegal Coronation in somewhere in Oyo prompted me to this write-up. Different views, opinions, comments have been made by several people on this issue. The question here is how long are we going to give out what is meant to be precious to us to these Oyinbos?. This is no doubt caused by some factors which according to me stated here-under:
Economic factor: The current state of the country's economy is a major factor in this context. economy recession, inflation on everything lead some of Babalawos/Orisa practitioners to take any chances that comes from these oyinbos. Do they have to put our tradition in line with this factor?. I wonder.
Greediness for money: This is a major factor that can never be sidelined. The greediness for money by some babalawos has made Yoruba Tradition loose its pride in the diaspora. Babalawos initiate these oyinbos into several Orisas because of a token. They release information that is meant to be sacred to these people, they also give them "title" that is not even relevant to Yoruba tradition. The current exchange rate of Dollar(USD) to Naira is what attracts them to give out what is of secret to these oyinbos.
Illiteracy: Most of the babalawos here are not book-literate, they want to be among those who are the literates. As soon as they see an literate babalawo with some of the diaspora especially on facebook they also want to be among. in the quest of doing this it lead to nothing but tarnishing the intergrity of Yoruba tradition in the diaspora
Poverty: most of babalawos here at home have many children, wives they have to take care of, so they cannot afford to loose the chance when these oyinbos come forward for some sacred information
Fame: They want to be known. As soon as they perform any initiation for the oyinbos, they post pictures on the internet especially on Facebook so as to be popular.
Lack of self censorship: Self censorship is missing among some babalawos here at home. They post pictures, videos of some rituals that is not meant for the public on the internet all in the name of money or awareness. Some even go as far as posting pictures/videos of an ongoing ifa initiation in the Igbodu to the internet. This has to stop.
Weak governance by governing body: The council is weak. Our elders is not making sure that the ethics governing this practice should be strictly adhere to. This is the reason why we see some illegal act, coronation being carried out by these money lover babalawos. Our elders with due respect should strengthen the standards and i believe by doing this the integrity of our dearest tradition shall be restored.
