Why Iyerosun chose never to part away from Ifa



This is the divination powder usually extracted form a particular tree. The name "Iyerosun" is actually Ìyè (powder ) Ìrosùn ( ìrosùn tree), meaning that iyerosun is the powder  derived from irosun tree. It is the wood dust made by termites  form the irosun tree.


Sometimes, Èlùbo (Yam powder)  is used in place of iyerosun.  This is however not common in practice.
Iyerosun is sprinkled on the Opon- Ifa  (Divination tray) and scattered on its face to imprint the Odu Ifa. This powder is very important to Ifa and a competent awo can use it to perform WONDERS.


This powder has blessed by Olodumare  and what ever a babalawo or Iyanifa wishes to do with it shall come to pass as long as it is properly done.
The position of iyerosun in Ifa is such that ikin cannot be used for consultation in the absence of this powder.

 By implication, the most sacred aspect of Ifa cannot be carried out without the use of iyerosun.  I'm ogbe- irete,  Ifa tells us what led to the situation where iyerosun choose never to part with Ifa forever.


In the Odu  (Ogbe- irete), Ifa explained that Ìyè was looking for an ideal spouse. She first went to Àkùko (Rooster) who was jobless man who always scattered iye about with his legs. Iye  later left Akuko and she married Odidere (parrot)  who proved to be a gossip and a flippant person. No secret can be kept with Odidere. Iye abandoned Odidere again and married to Aroni. Aroni was fond of borrowing things about, including the part of his body. She left. Then she finally married Ifa. The relationship proved very rewarding to the extent that iye and Ifa became inseparable. It must however be noted that when Ifa says that iye got married to Ifa, it does not necessarily mean a man- woman relationship but rather a special spiritual and ritual relationship.
That is how  according to Ogbe- irete iyerosun became an important instrument in Ifa.
